Watercoloured Butterflies

Tonight I wanted to create a card for the Just Add Ink colour challenge. One of the main reasons I wanted to do it, was for the challenge itself as I found it tough. This week we are being asked to create using the following colours:

I wouldn’t normally use the colours Blueberry Bushel and Pineapple punch on the same card. Partly because they are the colours of the West Coast Eagles….and I am a Fremantle Dockers supporter! But mostly because they are both so bright – to me they would both normally be the hero on card. So I took up the challenge and sat down to get creative.

I stamped some butterflies from the Butterfly Gala stamp set using Stazon black ink. The reason I used Stazon is because I was planning on watercoloring. I actually stamped quite a few butterflies on different paper including normal whisper white, thick whisper white, shimmery white and watercolour paper. I really don’t have a lot of watercolouring skills so I wanted to see what would work best. For all of the paper types, I added a layer of water before starting and then used Blueberry Bushel on the outer edges and the middle, and then blended in Coastal Cabana in the remainder.

All of the paper types work slightly differently, but in this instance I surprisingly preferred the plain whisper white. I had to work quite fast, but this suited me and the images I was colouring. The watercoloring paper was probably the next best, and if I had any real colouring skills this would be the one to use, but I found working fast on the whisper white gave me a good effect. I let these dry and then sprayed them with a shimmery spray I made up using rubbing alcohol (I use Isocol) and white frost shimmer paint. Lately I have been spraying everything with this spray….I cannot stop!

Putting the card together, I started with a thick whisper white base, and added a white panel that I embossed with the subtle embossing folder. I added a couple of strips of paper that had been stamped with the line / wavy image from Lilypad Lake in Pineapple Punch. I arranged the butterflies and used a single glue dot on each so that their wings would be free. The sentiment is from Abstract Impressions stamped in Coastal Cabana. I cut out the tag shape myself and added some thick bakers twine.

Just for your info, the Butterfly Gala stamp set and the coordinating Butterfly Duet Punch are both carrying over into the next catalogue – however they won’t be in a bundle. So if you want to buy this bundle and save 10%, you have until June 3rd to do so.

  1. Very sweet card Shannon, I see what you mean about the Eagles colours though!! Perhaps you have an Eagles supporter friend that you can give it too? I really love how you have split the background panel, creates a lovely point of interest. Chantell Just Add Ink
